How Ukraine’s Military Neutralized 50 Russian Drones and Struck a Massive Oil Refinery
In recent developments, Ukrainian forces have successfully intercepted a significant number of Russian drones and conducted a targeted attack on a major Russian oil refinery.
Drone Interceptions:
On January 26, 2025, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 50 out of 72 Russian attack drones launched overnight. Some of these drones struck civilian infrastructure in Sumy, causing damage to residential and commercial buildings.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that nine drones deviated from their intended paths due to electronic warfare tactics, and one drone remains unaccounted for.
Attack on Russian Oil Refinery:
In a separate incident, Ukrainian drones targeted one of Russia’s largest oil refineries in Ryazan. The attack resulted in fires at oil storage tanks and damage to railway loading racks and a hydrotreater unit.
This refinery accounted for nearly 5% of Russia’s total oil refining throughput in 2024. The assault led to the suspension of loadings and significant damage, with a 20,000-ton reservoir ablaze and adjacent storage tanks affected.
