Ogun State Governance: Governor Abiodun on Sharia Court Rumors
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has issued a statement clarifying that no Sharia Court is authorized to operate within the state.
He emphasized that the state’s legal framework recognizes only courts established under the Nigerian Constitution or state laws, including Magistrates’ Courts, High Courts, Customary Courts, and others. Sharia law is not part of the legal system governing Ogun State.
Governor Abiodun acknowledged the rights of individuals to practice their chosen religion and apply their faith in personal matters. However, he stressed that this freedom does not permit the formation of unauthorized assemblies or institutions.
He warned that individuals or groups attempting to establish such courts without legal backing are acting unlawfully and must cease all related activities immediately.
The governor urged the public to disregard any summons or documents associated with unauthorized Sharia Courts and to report such occurrences to state authorities promptly.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring respect for the state’s legal and judicial framework to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
