Niger Republic Arms Courier Captured: The Role of DSS and Military
The Department of State Services (DSS), in collaboration with military personnel from Operation Hadarin Daji, has successfully intercepted a significant arms shipment originating from Niger Republic. The operation led to the arrest of a notorious arms smuggler, Abubakar Umar, also known as Dangada.
Acting on actionable intelligence, security operatives monitored Umar’s movements as he transported the weapons into Nigeria. He was apprehended along the Kaura Namoda-Zurmi Road in Zamfara State, where he intended to deliver the arms to bandit leaders operating in the Birnin Magaji Local Government Area.
Upon realizing he had been ambushed, Umar attempted to flee, abandoning his vehicle—a red Volkswagen Golf station wagon with Abuja registration number RBC 731 GU. A search of the vehicle revealed a substantial cache of weapons, including:
- Seven AK-47 rifles
- Two PKT General-Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG)
- Two AK-103 rifles
- 169 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition
- Nine PKT rounds with an ammunition belt
- Thirteen empty magazines
Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, inspected the seized arms in Gusau, the state capital, and commended the DSS and military forces for their effective collaboration. He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support in addressing security challenges in the region.
This operation underscores the Nigerian security agencies’ commitment to combating arms smuggling and enhancing safety within the country.
