ECOWAS Decision on Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has formalized the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic from the regional bloc as of January 29, 2025. These nations, currently under military rule following recent coups, had previously announced their intent to exit ECOWAS, citing disagreements over imposed sanctions and the bloc’s stance on their political transitions.
Despite their departure, ECOWAS has decided to maintain certain cooperative measures to minimize disruption for citizens of the exiting countries.
Notably, the bloc will continue to recognize the passports of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic, allowing their citizens to enjoy visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS member states. This decision underscores ECOWAS’s commitment to regional integration and the free movement of people, even amid political divergences.
In response to their withdrawal, the three nations have formed the Alliance of Sahel States and have introduced their own biometric passports. ECOWAS has acknowledged these developments and has expressed a willingness to keep diplomatic channels open, emphasizing that the door remains open for future collaboration or reintegration.
