Religious Extremism in S’West: Gani Adams vs. Sultan’s Sharia Push
The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has expressed strong opposition to the establishment of Sharia courts in Nigeria’s South-West region, following support for such courts by the Sultan of Sokoto-led Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
Adams emphasized that Sharia law is alien to Yoruba culture and religious beliefs, warning that its enforcement could lead to crises in the region.
The NSCIA, on the other hand, has advocated for the creation of Sharia courts in the South-West, arguing that they are constitutionally supported and would serve the significant Muslim population in the area.
The council expressed concern over perceived intolerance and disregard for the rights of Muslims in the southern part of the country.
