Telecom Tariff Hike Sparks Nationwide Protest Led by NLC
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a nationwide protest scheduled for Tuesday, February 4, 2025, in response to the recent 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs. This decision was made following the National Administrative Council meeting of the NLC.
NLC President Joe Ajaero condemned the tariff hike, describing it as “insensitive, unjustifiable, and a direct attack on Nigerian workers and the general populace, who are already suffering under worsening economic hardship.” He emphasized that the increase would further burden citizens already grappling with high living costs.
The NLC has directed all its affiliates and state councils to commence full mobilization in preparation for the protest. They have also called upon willing civil society allies to join the movement. The Congress demands an immediate suspension of the 50% tariff hike and urges the Federal Government, the Nigerian Communications Commission, and the National Assembly to engage in meaningful dialogue with critical stakeholders to review the proposed tariff adjustment in light of the economic realities facing Nigerians.
The NLC has warned that failure to meet these demands may lead to a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services and further mass actions, including the possibility of a nationwide withdrawal of services to resist policies that deepen poverty and inequality.
