Legal Action Against Sowore for ‘Illegal IG’ Statement
On January 29, 2025, Nigerian activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore, was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges of cybercrime. The charges stem from statements Sowore allegedly made on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, where he referred to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun as the “illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force.”
The police filed a 16-count charge against Sowore, accusing him of intentionally disseminating false information with the intent to cause public unrest. One of the charges highlights a post from December 20, 2024, in which Sowore purportedly stated, “IGP Kayode Egbetokun will destroy the Nigeria police if we don’t act now.”
Sowore pleaded not guilty to all charges. Following his plea, he was granted administrative bail but rejected the conditions set forth, opting to remain in custody. The case has garnered significant attention, with various public figures and legal practitioners monitoring the proceedings.
