US Airlines’ Safety Record Shattered: Insights into the Washington D.C. Crash

On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, a tragic mid-air collision occurred near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in Washington, D.C., ending a 16-year period without fatal crashes involving U.S. airlines. American Eagle Flight 5342, a regional jet carrying 64 passengers and crew, collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter during its approach to the airport.

The collision resulted in both aircraft crashing into the Potomac River. All 67 individuals on board the two aircraft are presumed dead.

In response to the incident, Reagan National Airport temporarily suspended all flights. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the collision.
