Drug Transport in Abuja: Dispatch Rider Arrested by FCT Police
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested 27-year-old dispatch rider Magaji Adamu for allegedly transporting multiple cartons of nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” suspected to be intended for illegal use. The arrest occurred on January 20, 2024, during a routine patrol in Abuja.
Adamu, a graduate of Gidan Waya College of Education in Kafanchan, Kaduna, had been working as a dispatch rider for the logistics company Gonymble since December 2023. He confessed that this was his fourth delivery of the substance, which he received from an individual identified as Danladi. Each delivery earned him ₦5,000. Initially, Adamu claimed he was unaware of the true nature of the gas, believing it was used in hospitals, as Danladi had informed him.
Nitrous oxide is commonly used for medical sedation and in food processing. However, when inhaled recreationally, it can produce short-lived euphoria, giggling, hallucinations, and lightheadedness. Prolonged abuse can lead to serious health risks, including memory loss, depression, nerve damage, oxygen deprivation, heart complications, and lowered blood pressure.
In response to the growing misuse of nitrous oxide, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had previously directed law enforcement agencies to take action against its illegal sale and distribution. This directive followed concerns about the recreational use of laughing gas among young people.
The FCT Police Command has cautioned residents, especially those involved in logistics and delivery services, to be vigilant and thoroughly verify the legitimacy of their business transactions. Criminal elements often exploit unsuspecting individuals to transport illegal substances, putting them at risk of legal consequences.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Olatunji Disu, emphasized the importance of conducting thorough checks before accepting deliveries, reporting any suspicious transactions to law enforcement, and remaining cautious when dealing with unknown individuals. He also recommended that logistics and delivery service providers maintain transparent operations and adhere to legal and security regulations to ensure a safe environment.
