PSC Enforces Retirement for Over-60 Police Officers: What It Means

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has mandated the immediate retirement of senior police officers who are over 60 years old or have served more than 35 years. This decision was made during an extraordinary meeting held on Friday, January 31, 2025, in Abuja.

The PSC revisited its 2017 policy, which had allowed officers to use their date of appointment rather than enlistment for service calculations. Upon review, the Commission concluded that this policy contradicted the Public Service Rule No. 020908 (i & ii), which stipulates retirement upon reaching 35 years of service or 60 years of age.

The decision has been communicated to the Inspector General of Police for implementation. This move comes amid recent controversies surrounding age falsification within the Nigeria Police Force, with reports indicating that over 300 officers were implicated in altering their records to extend their service.
