Moscow Criticizes Trump’s Missile Defense Shield Ambitions
On January 27, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order initiating the development of an “Iron Dome for America,” a missile defense system aimed at countering ballistic and hypersonic threats. This initiative revives elements of the Reagan-era Strategic Defense Initiative, commonly known as “Star Wars,” which proposed deploying missile interceptors in space.
In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized the plan, stating, “We view this as yet another confirmation of the U.S. intent to turn space into an arena of armed confrontation and to deploy weapons there.”
The proposed missile defense system has raised concerns about the potential militarization of space and its implications for global security dynamics. Analysts suggest that such developments could lead to an arms race in space, further escalating tensions between major powers.
