Conflict Is No Joke: Tems Cancels Rwanda Concert in Protest Against M23 Support
Nigerian Grammy-winning singer Tems has canceled her upcoming concert in Kigali, Rwanda, originally scheduled for March 22, 2025, at the BK Arena. The decision comes in response to Rwanda’s alleged support of the M23 armed group, which is currently engaged in an offensive in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In a statement on her social media, Tems expressed her unawareness of the geopolitical tensions at the time of planning the concert and apologized to her fans. She emphasized that “conflict is no joke” and extended her heartfelt wishes to those affected by the ongoing situation.
The cancellation has elicited mixed reactions online. Some individuals questioned how an African artist could be unaware of such significant regional issues, while others commended her for taking a stand and showing solidarity with the people affected by the conflict.
The M23 rebels have recently intensified their activities, tightening their hold around Goma, the largest city in eastern DRC. This escalation has raised concerns over a conflict deeply rooted in historical tensions and the struggle for control over the DRC’s vast mineral resources.
