Police Begin Strict Enforcement of Third Party Insurance: What You Need to Know
As of today, February 1, 2025, the Nigeria Police Force has commenced the enforcement of mandatory Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance across the nation. This initiative, directed by Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, aims to enhance road safety and ensure that all vehicle owners comply with existing insurance regulations.
According to Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, all vehicle owners are required to possess valid third-party insurance before operating their vehicles on public roads. Non-compliance with these laws can result in penalties, including fines or imprisonment.
The enforcement will involve police officers conducting checks to verify the insurance status of vehicles. Vehicle owners without valid third-party insurance are advised to obtain coverage promptly to avoid legal consequences.
The Nigeria Police Force emphasizes its commitment to improving road safety and protecting the lives of all citizens through the strict enforcement of traffic laws and regulations. Public cooperation is essential in achieving these objectives.
