Shocking Turn in Abuja School Blast: Hospitalized Survivor Detained
On January 6, 2025, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at the Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School in Kuchibuyi Village, Bwari Area Council, Abuja. The explosion resulted in the deaths of two individuals, identified as Harisu Lawan and Majid Ibrahim, who were reportedly tampering with the device on the school’s veranda. Two others sustained injuries: a female trader, Fauziyya Ilyasu, and a male survivor, Abba Saidu.
Following the incident, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command arrested the school’s proprietor, Mallam Adamu Ashimu, for questioning. Additionally, after receiving treatment at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada, survivor Abba Saidu was taken into police custody. According to his brother, Salisu Dungu, Saidu was detained by police detectives shortly after his discharge and has been held for nearly two weeks.
Preliminary investigations revealed that three men from Katsina State had visited the school’s proprietor and were suspected of bringing the explosive device with them. Tragically, two of these men died in the explosion, while the third, along with the female trader, sustained severe injuries. The police have confirmed that remnants of the device indicate it was an IED.
