Usman Yusuf’s Legal Troubles: Remanded in Kuje Prison
Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf, has been remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre following his arraignment on charges of alleged fraud. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought a five-count amended charge against him, accusing him of abusing his office to confer undue advantages upon himself and awarding contracts without adhering to due procurement processes during his tenure between 2016 and 2017.
Professor Yusuf pleaded not guilty to all charges during his appearance before Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court. Following his plea, the court ordered his remand in Kuje prison until the next hearing, scheduled for February 12, 2025, when his bail application will be considered.
This legal action follows previous allegations against Professor Yusuf, including claims of awarding contracts to relatives and misappropriation of funds, which led to his suspension and eventual dismissal from the NHIS in 2019.
