Proactive Measures by NCDC Against Ebola in Uganda
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has intensified surveillance efforts following the confirmation of an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Uganda. On January 30, 2025, Uganda’s Ministry of Health reported a case of EVD caused by the Sudan virus species in regions including Wakiso, Mukono, and Mbale City in Mbale District. To date, there has been one confirmed case resulting in a fatality, and authorities are monitoring 44 identified contacts.
In response, the NCDC has heightened surveillance across Nigeria, particularly at points of entry such as airports and border crossings, to rapidly detect and respond to potential cases. The agency has also updated its EVD emergency contingency plan to ensure effective preparedness and response to any potential outbreak.
The NCDC acknowledges Uganda’s significant experience in managing Ebola outbreaks and the swift implementation of necessary containment measures. While there are currently no reported cases of EVD in Nigeria, the NCDC emphasizes the importance of vigilance and adherence to preventive measures. The agency advises Nigerians to remain informed and follow official health guidelines to mitigate the risk of Ebola transmission.
