President Trump Halts Tariffs on Canada for 30 Days
President Donald Trump has agreed to a 30-day suspension of the proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports following discussions with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This decision comes after two phone calls between the leaders, during which they negotiated terms to address U.S. concerns over border security and drug smuggling.
As part of the agreement, Canada will deploy 10,000 troops to its northern border and implement enhanced measures to combat fentanyl smuggling. Prime Minister Trudeau has committed to a $1.3 billion border security plan, which includes new helicopters, advanced technology, additional personnel, and increased coordination with U.S. authorities. Additionally, Canada will appoint a “Fentanyl Czar,” classify cartels as terrorist organizations, and establish a joint task force with the United States.
This temporary pause aims to prevent significant economic disruption and allows both nations to negotiate a more permanent solution. Ontario Premier Doug Ford welcomed the delay but emphasized the need to focus on the trade war with China.
The agreement reflects the close historical ties and mutual support between the two nations, as highlighted by Prime Minister Trudeau. He expressed a sense of betrayal over the initial tariff threats, referencing the longstanding partnership between Canada and the United States.
