New Retirement Age for Doctors Set at 65 Years
President Bola Tinubu has approved an increase in the retirement age for doctors and other healthcare workers in Nigeria from 60 to 65 years. This decision was conveyed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, during a meeting with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, and the Joint Health Sector Unions.
The approval aims to address challenges such as brain drain and to enhance knowledge transfer within the healthcare sector. Additionally, the government has secured funds to pay arrears resulting from the adjustment of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and is correcting consequential adjustments arising from the implementation of the new minimum wage.
