Understanding Kano’s N2.5 Billion Mass Wedding Plan
Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has defended the Kano State Government’s allocation of ₦2.5 billion for mass weddings. He argues that such initiatives are common globally and serve as social interventions to provide affordable marriage options for couples. Omokri points out that countries like China, South Korea, and Malaysia regularly conduct mass weddings as part of their social programs.
Addressing criticisms from Southern Nigerians, Omokri emphasizes that the mass weddings in Kano aim to uphold the moral fabric of society by facilitating lawful unions, contrasting this with what he describes as prevalent “mass fornication” in some Southern states. He also clarifies misconceptions about the educational status of children in Kano, noting that many attend Islamic madrassas (Almajiri schools), which instill discipline and life skills.
Omokri further highlights a perceived double standard, noting that while some individuals commend extravagant personal expenditures, they criticize government spending on social programs like the mass weddings.
