Senator Nwoko’s Move to APC: What It Means for Politics
Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). His resignation letter was read during the Senate plenary session on February 5, 2025, by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In his letter, Senator Nwoko cited persistent internal crises and instability within the PDP as the primary reasons for his departure, expressing concerns over the party’s diminishing capacity to function as an effective opposition.
The announcement of his defection led to a heated debate on the Senate floor. APC senators argued that the PDP’s internal divisions justified Nwoko’s move, while PDP senators contended that the party remained united, making the defection unconstitutional under Section 68(g) of the Nigerian Constitution.
Senator Nwoko’s defection is seen as a significant gain for the APC, particularly in Delta State, where the ruling party aims to strengthen its influence ahead of future elections.
