US Departure from UN Human Rights Council Announced by Trump
Donald Trump, during his presidency, did not sign an executive order withdrawing the U.S. from the UN Human Rights Council. Instead, in June 2018, the Trump administration officially announced the withdrawal of the United States from the council. The decision was made by then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the U.S. ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley.
The administration cited concerns about the council’s alleged bias against Israel and its inclusion of countries with questionable human rights records. Haley called the council a “hypocritical and self-serving organization” that made a “mockery of human rights.”
