Court Imposes Three-Year Prison Term on UNIUYO Academic
On February 5, 2025, the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo sentenced Professor Ignatius Uduk of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) to three years in prison for electoral fraud during the 2019 general elections. Serving as the returning officer for the Essien Udim State Constituency, Professor Uduk was found guilty of perjury and publishing false election results.
Justice Bassey Nkanang presided over the case, acquitting Uduk on the charge of announcing false election results but convicting him on counts of publishing false election results and perjury. The sentences for these convictions are to run concurrently.
This case marks the second high-profile conviction of a Nigerian professor for electoral fraud. In a similar incident, Professor Peter Ogban of the University of Calabar was sentenced to three years in prison for falsifying election results to favor a political candidate during the 2019 elections.
