Court Rules Against Kidney Donor’s Rights Claim
A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOSCO) on behalf of David Ukpo, the individual involved in the organ trafficking case against former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu. The suit challenged previous court orders that granted Ekweremadu access to Ukpo’s biodata for use in his defense in a UK court.
Justice Inyang Ekwo ruled that EDOSCO lacked the legal standing to file the suit on Ukpo’s behalf, noting that the organization is not a juristic person recognized by law. Consequently, the court struck out the case.
This development is part of the ongoing legal proceedings involving Ekweremadu, who, along with his wife, was convicted in the UK for conspiring to exploit Ukpo for his kidney. In May 2023, Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison.
