Tragic Incident: Six Killed by Herdsmen in Benue
In recent days, Benue State has experienced a series of violent attacks attributed to suspected herdsmen, resulting in multiple fatalities and widespread fear among residents.
Okpamaju and Asa Settlements Attack
Between February 3 and 5, 2025, suspected herdsmen launched sustained attacks on the Okpamaju community in Okete Ward and the Asa settlement in Ewulo Ward of Otukpo Local Government Area. These assaults resulted in the deaths of six individuals, with many others injured and displaced. Properties were also destroyed during the raids. Kennedy Angbo, the lawmaker representing Otukpo-Akpa in the Benue State House of Assembly, confirmed these incidents and expressed concern over the escalating violence in his constituency.
Clash Between Hunters and Herdsmen
On February 3, 2025, a violent confrontation occurred between local hunters and armed herdsmen in Okpomaju village. The clash began when armed herders reportedly opened fire on a group of hunters during a routine expedition, resulting in the deaths of two hunters and injuries to several others. In retaliation, the hunters killed one of the herders. This incident has heightened tensions in the area, leading many residents to flee their homes in fear of further violence.
Ongoing Attacks in Otukpo Communities
As of February 5, 2025, three communities in Otukpo Local Government Area—Okpomaju, Odudaje, and Asa 2—have come under attack by suspected herdsmen. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants invaded these villages, firing sporadically and causing residents to flee into nearby forests for safety. The continuous nature of these attacks has left the communities in a state of heightened alert and fear.
Official Response
The Benue State Police Command has acknowledged the incidents, with the Police Public Relations Officer, Sewuese Anene, confirming the violence. Anene noted that the initial conflict was triggered by disputes over open grazing on farmlands in the Okpamaju area. Authorities have urged calm and assured the public that efforts are underway to restore peace and prevent further attacks.
These incidents underscore the ongoing security challenges in Benue State, particularly the recurring conflicts between local farmers and herdsmen. The state has witnessed numerous such attacks over the past decade, leading to significant loss of life, displacement of residents, and destruction of property. The government and security agencies are being called upon to intensify efforts to address the root causes of these conflicts and to implement measures that ensure the safety and security of all residents.
