Database Overhaul Ordered by Tinubu Following NIN Findings
President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive clean-up of Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database following the discovery that over 6,000 nationals from Niger Republic had been registered. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) identified these unauthorized entries and has since removed them from the system.
This action underscores the Nigerian government’s commitment to ensuring the integrity of its national identification system. The clean-up aims to maintain accurate records, especially for social intervention programs such as conditional cash transfers and student loans, ensuring that only eligible Nigerian citizens benefit from these initiatives.
In a related development, President Tinubu has established an inter-ministerial committee to investigate allegations that some telecommunications providers have linked NINs to subscribers’ lines without their consent. The committee comprises the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani; and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda.
