Self-Rule Advocacy: A Just Cause
Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has urged his supporters to refrain from pleading for his release, emphasizing that the pursuit of self-determination is a constitutionally protected right and not a criminal act. He stated that his release should be a matter of legal compliance rather than an act of mercy or pardon.
Kanu highlighted that self-determination is an inalienable right recognized under Nigerian law, as well as international frameworks established by the United Nations, the United Kingdom, and Kenya. He expressed concern that mischaracterizing this right as a criminal offense could lead to misguided appeals for clemency, thereby undermining the rule of law.
He further noted that calls for his release should focus on adherence to legal principles rather than appeals for pardon, which might imply guilt. Kanu commended organizations such as Afenifere, Ohaneze, the World Igbo Congress (WIC), and others for their principled stance, asserting that his release is warranted because he has committed no offense under the law.
