Proving Innocence: INEC’s Directive to Sacked REC
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the dismissed Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, to present his defense in court rather than through media engagements. This counsel follows Yunusa-Ari’s recent press conference, where he claimed he was not granted a fair hearing and maintained that Aishatu ‘Binani’ Dahiru won the 2023 Adamawa governorship election.
In response, INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, emphasized that the appropriate venue for Yunusa-Ari to substantiate his claims is the courtroom. Oyekanmi stated, “There is nothing new in what he said. He should go to court to defend himself, not through a news conference.”
Yunusa-Ari faces a six-count charge filed by INEC before a high court in Yola, Adamawa State, alleging misconduct during the 2023 governorship election. The commission maintains that the legal process is the proper channel for him to address these allegations.
