Sri Lanka Faces Blackout After Monkey Disrupts Transformer

On February 9, 2025, Sri Lanka experienced a nationwide power outage after a monkey came into contact with a grid transformer near Colombo, causing an imbalance in the system. The blackout began around 11:00 AM local time and lasted approximately five hours, affecting the island’s 22 million residents.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of Sri Lanka’s power infrastructure, which has faced challenges in the past due to economic crises and technical issues. The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has initiated an investigation to prevent similar occurrences in the future and is considering implementing additional protective measures.
