Trump's Order: The Gulf of Mexico Renamed

Gulf of America: Google’s Name Change Explained

In a recent executive order titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,” President Donald Trump officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” and designated February 9 as “Gulf of America Day.” Following this directive, Google Maps has updated its platform to reflect the new name for users in the United States. Users in Mexico will continue to see “Gulf of Mexico,” while those in other regions will see “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”

Google has stated that it follows official government sources for geographic names and applies regional variations accordingly. The company determines which name to display based on user location data from their mobile operating system, SIM card, network, or desktop search settings.

Other mapping services, such as Apple Maps and MapQuest, have not yet adopted this change. Apple Maps redirects searches for “Gulf of America” to the Gulf of Mexico, and MapQuest has not made any updates reflecting the new name. Google-owned Waze displays both names for the Gulf of Mexico but does not yield results for searches of “Gulf of America.”

The renaming has elicited varied reactions, with some viewing it as a reaffirmation of national heritage, while others consider it unnecessary. Mexico has maintained the original name, and other countries are not required to recognize the new designation.
