National Grid Collapse Leads to Widespread Blackouts in Nigeria
On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Nigeria experienced a nationwide blackout following the collapse of its national electricity grid. The incident occurred around 11:34 am, as reported by the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.
This marks the first grid collapse in 2025, following 12 such incidents in 2024.
The collapse led to widespread power outages across several parts of the country, including major cities like Lagos and Abuja.
The Nigerian National Grid platform confirmed the disturbance, stating, “There was a ‘GRID DISTURBANCE’ before noon today. Parts of the country experienced outage. Further information shortly.”
As of now, efforts are underway to restore power, with collaboration among critical stakeholders to address the situation. The exact cause of the collapse has not been disclosed, but Nigeria’s power grid has a history of frequent failures due to aging infrastructure, underinvestment, and vandalism.
