Unizik Outlines Next Steps After Student-Lecturer Altercation
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a recent altercation between Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies, and Ms. Goddy Mbakwe Precious, a third-year student in the Department of History and International Studies. The incident, which has garnered significant attention on social media, reportedly began when Dr. Okoye interrupted a video recording by Ms. Mbakwe, leading to a confrontation where the student allegedly bit the lecturer and tore his clothing.
In response, the university’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu, has ordered a full-scale, transparent, and unbiased investigation into the matter. The university emphasized its commitment to upholding discipline and decorum, assuring that appropriate actions and sanctions will be implemented based on the investigation’s findings.
Both parties have provided their accounts of the incident. Ms. Mbakwe claims that Dr. Okoye pushed her and attempted to seize her phone, leading to a physical struggle. Conversely, Dr. Okoye asserts that after asking her to excuse him, he overheard her making derogatory remarks, prompting him to request the deletion of the video, which escalated into the altercation.
The university has called for calm among all concerned parties and the public, reaffirming its dedication to maintaining high moral and ethical standards within its community.
