Mother Receives N600,000 After Baby Sold for N4 Million
In a recent incident in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria, a 26-year-old woman named Rachael sold her 11-day-old baby for ₦600,000 due to financial difficulties. The child was subsequently resold for ₦4 million to a 42-year-old woman seeking to adopt. Rachael, who also has an older son, explained that the baby’s father had denied paternity, leaving her solely responsible for their care. She resorted to cleaning and other menial jobs to support herself during pregnancy. After giving birth on January 27, 2025, she was introduced to a woman who offered assistance but instead facilitated the sale of the baby. Rachael received ₦600,000 from this intermediary, who admitted to selling the child for ₦3.5 million. The buyer, however, claimed she paid ₦4 million and was assured that the adoption documents were being processed. The Delta State Police Command has arrested Rachael and two accomplices in connection with the case.
