Hwang Ui-jo Receives Suspended Sentence for Secret Videos

Footballer Hwang Ui-jo’s Legal Troubles Over Filming Scandal

South Korean footballer Hwang Ui-jo has received a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, after being convicted of illegally filming a sexual encounter without his partner’s consent. The Seoul Central District Court found him guilty of secretly recording intimate moments with one woman in 2022, while acquitting him of similar charges involving another woman.

The court emphasized the severity of Hwang’s actions, noting that he used his cellphone to record the acts without consent during sexual intercourse. The judges stated, “Considering that he filmed them with a cellphone during sexual intercourse against their will, the number of times the crime was committed, and the specific details of the filmed material, the nature of the crime is not good.” They further highlighted the serious societal harm caused by such illegal filming, underscoring the need for strict punishment.

Hwang’s case came to public attention in June 2023 when explicit videos were leaked online by his sister-in-law, who attempted to blackmail him. She was subsequently sentenced to three years in prison for her actions. During the investigation into the leak, authorities discovered that Hwang had recorded the videos without his partners’ knowledge or consent.

In response to the allegations, Hwang was suspended from the South Korean national team in September 2023. He initially denied any wrongdoing but later admitted to the charges, expressing deep remorse for his actions. His admission of guilt and expression of remorse were factors that contributed to the suspension of his prison sentence.

Hwang Ui-jo, 32, has had a notable football career, including stints with Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League and Alanyaspor in Turkey. He has also been a significant figure in South Korean football, representing the national team in various international competitions.
