IGP Egbetokun Calls for Inquiry into Missing Firearms

Closed-Door Investigation Requested by IGP Egbetokun

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has formally requested that the Nigerian Senate conduct its investigation into the alleged disappearance of 3,907 assault rifles behind closed doors, citing security concerns. In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Egbetokun expressed appreciation for the Senate’s commitment to a thorough investigation but emphasized the need for discretion in handling sensitive security matters.

He argued that public hearings on such issues could lead to misinformation and potentially harm national security interests. The IGP also disputed the findings of the 2019 Auditor-General’s Report, which claimed that thousands of rifles were missing or unaccounted for in police armories as of January 2020, describing the report as “rooted in factual inaccuracies.”

He expressed concern that the public scrutiny resulting from the report had caused reputational damage to the Nigeria Police Force both domestically and internationally. Egbetokun reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with the National Assembly to enhance national security and improve the lives of Nigerians.
