Tragic Toll: 70 Deaths from Lassa Fever in 30 Days
Lassa fever, an acute viral hemorrhagic illness endemic to West Africa, has recently caused significant concern due to a surge in cases. In the past month, the disease has claimed the lives of 70 individuals across various states in Nigeria. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported that between January 1 and January 29, 2025, there were 1,037 suspected cases, with 244 confirmed infections spanning 16 states and 50 Local Government Areas.
The states most affected include Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi, which collectively account for 84% of the confirmed cases. The NCDC has activated the national multi-sectoral Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate response activities and has emphasized the importance of preventive measures, such as proper food storage, maintaining clean environments, and seeking prompt medical attention for symptoms like fever, headache, and general body weakness.
Healthcare providers are also urged to maintain a high index of suspicion for Lassa fever and adhere to standard infection prevention and control measures when managing patients.
