Disrespect to Our People: Interior Minister’s Statement
Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has expressed strong disapproval over the Canadian Embassy’s refusal to grant a visa to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa. General Musa disclosed that he and several senior military officers were denied visas to attend an event honoring war veterans in Canada.
In an interview on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily,” Minister Tunji-Ojo described the visa denial as not only disrespectful to General Musa but also to Nigeria as a nation. He emphasized that if such treatment could be meted out to the CDS, it raises concerns about how ordinary Nigerians are treated by the Canadian authorities.
The Minister acknowledged that while visa issuance is a sovereign matter, diplomatic channels should have been utilized to address any concerns. He expressed confidence that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would take appropriate steps to resolve the issue and ensure mutual respect between both nations.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu also condemned the visa denial, describing it as disrespectful and asserting that Canada “can go to hell.” He commended General Musa for his leadership in addressing security challenges in Nigeria.
