Call for Vacant Seats: PDP Appeals to INEC
The Kaduna State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare vacant the seats of three members of the State House of Assembly and one member of the House of Representatives who recently defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP contends that these defections violate constitutional provisions and represent a betrayal of the electorate’s trust.
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Maria Dogo, the PDP emphasized that the defections are both unacceptable and unconstitutional. The party cited Sections 68(1)(g) and 109 of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandate that legislators who switch parties without a division in their original party must vacate their seats.
Consequently, the PDP has urged the Speakers of both the House of Representatives and the Kaduna State House of Assembly to declare these seats vacant and prompt INEC to organize bye-elections to fill the resulting vacancies.
This development underscores the ongoing political dynamics within Nigeria, where party allegiance and legislative representation are closely monitored and regulated to maintain the integrity of the democratic process.
