Army Chief Gen Ariyibi Confirms Boko Haram's Foreign Funding Links

Foreign Support for Boko Haram: Gen Ariyibi’s Revealing Statement

Major General Adekunle Ariyibi, the Chief of Defence Standards and Evaluations at Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, has affirmed that Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West African Province (ISWAP) receive substantial foreign funding. In a recent interview, he emphasized that the sustained operations of these terrorist groups over the past 15 years are indicative of external collaboration and assistance. He noted that their access to international funding has enabled them to acquire advanced weaponry and technology, including drones capable of delivering lethal payloads.

This assertion aligns with recent claims by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry, who suggested that certain international aid agencies, such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), may have inadvertently funded terrorist organizations, including Boko Haram. In response, Nigerian Senator Ali Ndume has called for a thorough investigation into these allegations to verify their accuracy and address any potential complicity.

The Nigerian military’s acknowledgment of foreign backing for these insurgent groups underscores the complexity of combating terrorism in the region and highlights the necessity for international cooperation to disrupt the financial networks sustaining these organizations.
