Investigation Continues in Asylum Seeker’s Death in Ireland
On February 15, 2025, Quam Babatunde, a 34-year-old Nigerian asylum seeker, was fatally stabbed in Dublin’s South Anne Street following a rap concert. Babatunde, uninvolved in the altercation between two groups, was attacked and sustained multiple stab wounds. Despite being rushed to St. James’s Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
In connection with this incident, two men have been arrested. One suspect was apprehended in Dublin, while the other was detained in Belfast by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) as he attempted to board a ferry. Both individuals are currently in custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.
Authorities are appealing for witnesses, particularly those present in the South Anne Street and Duke Lane Upper areas between 2:45 am and 3:30 am on the day of the incident. They are also seeking any mobile phone or dash-cam footage that could aid in the investigation.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan has condemned the attack, emphasizing the commitment to apprehend those responsible. The incident has raised concerns about public safety and the need for increased security measures in Dublin’s city center.
