Friendship and Politics: Davido’s Take on Osun Crisis
Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, recently addressed criticisms regarding his public comments on the political unrest in Osun State. The turmoil began when sacked local government chairmen from the All Progressives Congress (APC) attempted to reclaim their positions, leading to violent clashes. In response, Davido criticized the Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Abba, accusing him of failing to uphold the rule of law.
Following his remarks, some individuals suggested that Davido should leverage his friendship with Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, to address the crisis privately. One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, “He has ST at his disposal; he should be making more calls instead of coming on the TL to threaten a whole commissioner of police.” In response, Davido stated, “Nothing he will do! He is my friend! And nothing more! His dad is the democratically elected president; my uncle is the democratically elected governor.”
Later, Davido retracted his earlier criticism of CP Mohammed Abba, acknowledging the commissioner’s efforts to maintain peace in the state. He admitted that his initial anger over the violence led him to overlook the police’s genuine efforts, stating, “The bloodshed of today infuriated me so much that I heaped all the blame on the Commissioner of Police… I now see that the issue is more than that of the Commissioner of Police or other security chiefs.”
