DSS Clarifies Purpose at Lagos Assembly

DSS’s Involvement in Lagos Assembly Explained

The Department of State Services (DSS) has clarified its presence at the Lagos State House of Assembly, stating that it was in response to a formal request from the Assembly’s Acting Clerk, Mr. A.T.B. Ottun. In a letter addressed to the DSS Director in Lagos State, Mr. Ottun expressed concerns over potential security threats, citing information that the impeached Speaker planned to resume office on February 18, 2025. To prevent possible disruptions, the letter requested enhanced security measures, including increased personnel and strict access control, starting from February 16, 2025.

In response to this request, DSS operatives, along with police officers, were deployed to the Assembly complex. Their presence led to tensions, with some lawmakers and staff expressing concerns over the perceived invasion. Speaker Mojisola Meranda criticized the DSS’s actions, describing them as an “attack on democracy” and questioning the necessity of armed personnel within the legislative chambers.

The DSS has maintained that its actions were solely to maintain order and prevent any security breaches, acting upon the Assembly’s official request.
