Defamation Lawsuit: Jay-Z Takes Legal Action Against Tony Buzbee Over False Accusations
Rapper Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has filed a lawsuit against attorney Tony Buzbee, alleging defamation, civil extortion, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. This legal action follows the dismissal of a lawsuit in which Buzbee represented a plaintiff accusing Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of raping a 13-year-old girl at a 2000 MTV Video Music Awards afterparty.
Jay-Z asserts that these false allegations have resulted in approximately $20 million in lost business deals and significant emotional distress for his family. The original lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice on February 14, 2025, preventing it from being refiled. Jay-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, emphasized that Jay-Z did not settle or pay any money, successfully clearing his name. In response, Jay-Z is now seeking legal redress against Buzbee for the damages incurred due to the unfounded claims.
