Labour Party Refutes Zoning of 2027 Presidential Ticket

No Zoning for 2027 Presidential Ticket, Labour Party States

The Labour Party has officially refuted claims that it has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Nigeria’s South-East region. In a statement released on February 17, 2025, National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh emphasized that the party has neither zoned nor intends to zone any of its positions to a specific geographical area or individual.

This clarification came in response to reports misinterpreting remarks made by National Chairman Julius Abure during a gathering of South-East party members in Abuja. Ifoh stated that Abure’s comments were taken out of context and that the party remains committed to a democratic process for candidate selection, without regional biases.

Abure had previously highlighted the industriousness and unity of the Igbo people, expressing that the Labour Party is open to supporting the South-East in achieving national leadership roles. However, he did not indicate any exclusive zoning arrangement for the 2027 elections.

The Labour Party asserts its national character, boasting a diverse followership across Nigeria. In the 2023 general elections, the party secured seats in both northern and southern regions, reflecting its broad appeal. Moving forward, all candidates are expected to emerge through competitive and democratic processes, as stipulated by the party’s constitution, which does not endorse zoning.
