Vatican Reports on Pope Francis’ Health Status
Pope Francis, aged 88, is currently hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital due to a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, which the Vatican has described as a “complex clinical situation.”
This condition involves multiple types of organisms affecting his respiratory system, necessitating an extended hospital stay for appropriate treatment.
The Pope was admitted on Friday after experiencing a severe bout of bronchitis that worsened over the week. Despite initial stability, his condition has required adjustments in his medication regimen. As of Monday, he remains in stable condition, having spent a peaceful night, and is reportedly in good spirits, engaging in routine activities such as reading newspapers and having breakfast.
Due to his hospitalization, several Vatican events have been canceled, including his weekly general audience and a special Jubilee Year mass. Nonetheless, Pope Francis has continued to make phone calls from his hospital bed, maintaining contact with members of a Catholic parish in Gaza.
Pope Francis has a history of health challenges, including the removal of part of his lung in his youth, making him more susceptible to respiratory infections. In recent years, he has also dealt with knee problems and has undergone surgeries, including colon surgery in 2021 and abdominal hernia surgery in 2023.
The Vatican has not specified the expected duration of his hospital stay, stating that it will continue as long as necessary to address the complexity of his condition. The Pope has expressed gratitude for the affection, prayers, and closeness he has received during this time.
