Myles Lewis-Skelly’s Red Card Leads to Arsenal Penalty
Arsenal has been fined £65,000 by the English Football Association (FA) for failing to control their players during a Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on January 25, 2025. The incident occurred when defender Myles Lewis-Skelly received a straight red card from referee Michael Oliver for a foul on Matt Doherty. In response, several Arsenal players surrounded the referee in protest.
Although the club admitted to the charge of improper conduct, they successfully appealed the red card, leading to the overturning of Lewis-Skelly’s three-match ban. The FA emphasized that the reversal of the red card did not excuse the players’ behavior during the match, which Arsenal won 1-0.
Following the match, referee Michael Oliver and his family received threats and abuse, prompting a police investigation. Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, condemned these actions, highlighting the need for a healthier environment in football.
