Edwin Clark Passes Away at 97: A Tribute

Elder statesman and prominent Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, has passed away at the age of 97. He died peacefully in Abuja on Monday, February 17, 2025, surrounded by family and loved ones. The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, announced his passing in a statement signed by his brother, Prof. C. C. Clark, and his son, Penawei Clark, on behalf of the children. The family expressed their appreciation for the public’s prayers during this time and noted that further details regarding the burial arrangements would be announced later.

Born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Edwin Clark was a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape. He served as the Federal Commissioner for Information and played a vital role in the administrations of military governor Samuel Ogbemudia and head of state General Yakubu Gowon between 1966 and 1975. Beyond his political career, Clark was a philanthropist and the founder of the Edwin Clark Foundation. In 2015, he established the Edwin Clark University in his hometown, contributing to the advancement of education in the region.

As the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Clark was a steadfast advocate for the rights and development of the Niger Delta region. His unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and national unity earned him respect across Nigeria. PANDEF, in mourning his loss, described him as a “mighty iroko” that has fallen, highlighting the profound impact of his leadership and advocacy.

Chief Edwin Clark’s legacy as a nationalist, politician, and community leader will be remembered for generations to come. His contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political development and his dedication to the upliftment of the Niger Delta have left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
