NLC Halts IBEDC Operations Amid Worker Dismissals
On February 18, 2025, the Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) initiated a protest at the headquarters of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) in Ibadan. The demonstration was in response to the recent termination of over 3,000 workers, many of whom were employed through outsourcing agencies.
Led by NLC Chairman Comrade Kayode Martin, union members barricaded the entrance to the IBEDC office, effectively halting operations and causing significant traffic disruptions from Challenge to Dugbe. The protesters demanded the immediate reinstatement of the dismissed workers and the implementation of the national minimum wage. Comrade Martin criticized the outsourcing agents associated with IBEDC for alleged exploitation, including unpaid minimum wages and unwarranted salary deductions.
He called on Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other stakeholders to intervene, warning that the mass dismissal could exacerbate unemployment and pose security risks in the state. In response, IBEDC management clarified that the affected individuals were not their direct employees but were hired through a third-party recruitment firm, PIPLL. The company stated that discussions with PIPLL are ongoing to ensure a swift and amicable resolution of the dispute
