Ugandan Judge Faces Allegations of Human Trafficking

High Court Judge Accused of Enslaving Woman in the UK

Ugandan High Court Judge Lydia Mugambe is currently on trial at Oxford Crown Court, facing allegations of human trafficking and modern slavery. Prosecutors accuse her of luring a young Ugandan woman to the United Kingdom under false pretenses, subsequently forcing her into unpaid domestic labor and childcare.

The alleged victim was reportedly prevented from securing other employment and coerced into serving as Mugambe’s maid. Additionally, Mugambe is charged with attempting to intimidate the woman into withdrawing her support for the prosecution. She denies all charges, and the trial is ongoing.

The case has drawn significant attention due to Mugambe’s prominent legal standing. Beyond her role in Uganda’s judiciary, she has been associated with United Nations criminal tribunals and was pursuing a PhD in law at Oxford University at the time of the alleged offenses. The trial continues as the court examines the evidence presented
