Diddy Challenges ‘Mann Act’: A Call for Justice
Sean “Diddy” Combs is seeking the dismissal of a federal charge against him, arguing that the statute used—the Mann Act of 1910—has racist origins and has been historically misapplied to target Black men. The Mann Act, officially known as the White-Slave Traffic Act, was enacted to combat human trafficking for prostitution. However, its broad language led to prosecutions that extended beyond its original intent, often criminalizing consensual sexual activities. Notably, the act was used against prominent Black figures such as boxer Jack Johnson and musician Chuck Berry, raising concerns about its application being influenced by racial biases.
Combs’ indictment includes charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in custody, with his trial scheduled for May. His legal team emphasizes the historical misuse of the Mann Act to argue for the dismissal of the related charge.
