Real Madrid Star Bellingham Faces Red Card Consequences
Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has been handed a two-match suspension following his red card in the 1-1 La Liga draw against Osasuna on Saturday. The Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) Disciplinary Committee upheld the referee’s report, which stated that Bellingham directed the phrase “f*** you” towards referee José Luis Munuera Montero, leading to his dismissal in the 41st minute. Despite Real Madrid’s appeal, presenting video evidence and expert analysis suggesting Bellingham said “f*** off” out of frustration and not as a direct insult, the RFEF maintained the original decision.
Consequently, Bellingham will miss the upcoming La Liga matches against Girona on February 23 and Real Betis on March 2. However, he remains eligible to participate in the Champions League fixture against Manchester City and the Copa del Rey semifinal first leg against Real Sociedad.
The incident has also led to significant backlash against referee Munuera Montero, who has reported receiving threats and harassment towards himself and his family. Montero expressed distress over the situation and highlighted the broader issue of violence and abuse towards referees, urging for change and protection.
In a related development, Montero is under investigation by the RFEF for alleged conflicts of interest concerning his involvement with Talentus Sports, a sports consultancy firm. Montero has denied any wrongdoing, stating that his company has never been paid by any sports institution.
Real Madrid has indicated plans to appeal the suspension, seeking a reduction or overturning of the ban.
